MultiPar 1.1.5 [Download of the Day] Review
At such a time not only is it important to be able to detect that the data is corrupted, but also to detect exactly how much of it is corrupted and how to recover it.
Imagine if you send a large volume of data over the internet, and the recipient gets the data mostly intact, but with a few damaged bits. Normally you’d have to send the data all over again. However MultiPar has a solution to this problem which requires minimal data transfer.
MultiPar is a brilliant tool for data verification and correction. MultiPar can be used to create recovery files for your data files in the PAR and PAR2 format. MultiPar can then use thesefiles to repair the files that were damaged.
If there are any important files which you store on external media especially DVDs and CDs, MultiPar can be quite useful. Even if you use disc recovery applications which read from damaged discs, you are likely to get corrupt data, however if you create and store this data beforehand, you will be able to get back your original files.
What MultiPar does is create recovery volumes in PAR / PAR2 format. Depending on how much recovery data you create you will be able to recover from moderate to severe errors. If you create a PAR2 file for a set of 20 files, then that PAR2 file will be able to recover from errors in any of those files.
[RELATED_ARTICLE]For example, if you have an archive split in 50 parts, and you know two different people who have different volumes missing, you will be able to send both of them the same PAR file and it will be able to recover the missing archive volume for both.
So you can go ahead and back up large volumes of data on discs which retaining only the PAR2 files. If in the future you need to restore data from a damaged disc, you can simply use the stored PAR2 files. Since the PAR files are only a fraction of the size of the entire dataset you will be able to store a lot of recovery data on your computer.
MultiPar is a replacement for the ageing QuickPar application. MultiPar adds support for newer multi-core processors and has beta support for the, as yet unreleased, PAR3 format. It integrates with the Windows shell and associates itself with PAR files allowing for file verification and recovery in just a few clicks.
MultiPar is a free application, and can be downloaded from here. Do also check out our other featured Download of the Day software here.
