Canon iR 2022n Review

VERDICT:

Priced at Rs. 87,500, the iR-2022n falls on the high side, but given the onboard features, expandability and impressive performance it more than makes up for the price. If you need a heavy duty, high volume, economical (less than 50 paisa / copy) multi-function device with A3 support then Canon’s iR-2022n should definitely be on your shortlist.


Gigantic paper printing monster

 

The iR-2022n is the latest in the workgroup multi-function device from Canon. Aimed at small to medium business the iR2022n supports A3 format. Unlike conventional MFDs which have a printer engine, the Image Runner (iR) class of devices are based on a copier engine. Out of the box the iR-2022n can be used for Printing, scanning, and for copying; FAX unit is available as an option.

It has two front paper cassettes each with 250 page capacity which can be further expanded to 1080 pages by adding two more paper trays. Auto paper and tray selection; automatically picks up the right paper from the right drawer thus improving efficiency and reduces down time. The machine has document management features and printouts from different sources such as print, fax, copy can be set to come out at dedicated trays. Other printing features include, Duplex printing, printing of multiple pages on one single page, printing barcodes for tracking documents and electronic collation of documents.

The scanner unit is a standard A3 size PUSH type scanner. To use the scanner, one has to first select the Scan button. The scanner comes with Canon’s Colour Network ScanGear which helps in acquiring the scanned image. The iR2022i has an ADF to automate the scanning process.

The iR2022n is equipped with 10/100 Ethernet port and hence can be hooked on to a network. The machine can be remotely administered using the RUI utility. Network settings can be done from both the front console and the remote administration utility.

On performance front, the iR2022n delivers on the printing speed; rated at 22 PPM we got 21 PPM during the tests. While copying, the device delivered 20 PPM. These figures speak for the copier based printing engine. For printing any test document the iR2022n takes no more than ten second on an average. When printing documents containing both text and images the unit takes 13 seconds and A4 size photographs need 18 seconds. When copying, the first page comes out within nine seconds, that’s fast.

Print quality is as good as any other laser printer. In fact, copied document also come out equally well. The scanner also delivers good results; final images have good colour saturation and details are faithfully reproduced.
