In 2023, several smartphones across price brackets come with IP ratings. ‘IP’ stands for Ingress Protection or International Protection and this rating determines how well a smartphone can hold up against dust and water. So, calling a smartphone ‘waterproof’ is not right – smartphones with IP ratings are water-resistant. It is advantageous to have a smartphone with an IP rating since it offers some level of protection against accidental splashes of water, sand, dust, and even full-fledged immersion into water. This can be the difference between your phone surviving an accidental drop in water versus it slowly succumbing to water damage.
Most premium phones in 2023 sport IP ratings, however, now you also get budget and mid-range phones that offer some level of dust and water protection. Albeit, the level of protection is usually lower on affordable phones. For instance, premium phones – that usually cost more than ₹70K – such as the iPhone 14 Pro Max, Samsung Galaxy 23 Ultra, iPhone 14, and Google Pixel 7 Pro pack IP68 protection. This provides a full dust-tight seal and allows immersion in water up to a depth and time limit specified by the manufacturer. This is usually the highest level of dust and water resistance we see on phones. But cheaper smartphones like the POCO F4 have only IP53 dust and water resistance.
