The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 is one of the best looking phones we have reviewed this year. It is a refinement over the company’s first Mi Mix smartphone, and the best thing is that it is being sold in India. Priced at Rs 35,999, the biggest competition to the device is the OnePlus 5, which is currently available in two variants. Our review of the phone is also out and apart from the camera, we don’t have any major qualms with the device. That being said, the Mix 2 is more of a visual treat and thus we bring this in pictures to you.
The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 not just looks the part, but is a flagship phone and hence carries the best in terms of hardware you can get this year. Here is a quick look at the internals:
Display: 5.99-inch
SoC: Qualcomm Snapdragon 835
RAM: 6GB
Storage: 128GB
Camera: 12MP, 5MP
Battery: 3400mAh
OS: Android 7.1.1
As we mentioned that one of the best feature of the phone is its display. Compared to its last iteration, the new Mi Mix 2 seems more refined and is more ergonomic.
The phone looks looks astetchcailly pleasing thanks to the smaller chin and the rounded corners. The thin top bezel hides the earpiece and the rest of the sensor are placed in the chin.
While the screen size has gone down from last year, we also like the fact that Xiaomi has replaced the ceramic sides of the old phone with a metal frame. This makes the Mi Mix 2 much easier to hold and pick-up.
The chin also hosts the front facing 5MP camera, which Xiaomi says is smaller and has been designed specifically for the Mi Mix 2. However, since it is at the bottom of the display, the user is required to turn the phone upside down to take a selfie.
In order to make more space or keeping up with the trends, Xiaomi has also dropped the 3.5mm headphone jack. Although, the phone will comes with a USB Type-C to 3.5mm jack dongle in the box.
At the bottom of the phone, we find two speaker grills. However, there is only one speaker in the bottom located on the right hand side. That being said, the Mi Mix 2 uses the earpiece speaker in tandem to provide a stereo sound effect.
The back of the phone again ceramic, which is a very durable material but at the same time quite brittle. While it looks good, it is also a fingerprint magnet.
The rear camera is a 12MP unit and Xiaomi using IMX386 from Sony for the job. It is aided by a 4-axis OIS and has a large 1.25um pixel size.
The image quality however is just decent and not upto par with most flagship smartphones available today.
We observed no issues in terms of call quality and since the phone has 43 bands in total, it can be used globally with all major carriers.
Like most phones these days, the Mi Mix 2 runs on Android 7.1.1 Nougat with MIUI 8 layered on top of it. It is a familiar UI and quite easy to use, but we are quite certain that Xiaomi won't be rushing an Android 8.0 update to the phone.
Talking about performance, you get a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC, combined with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. This means the phone is fast and can take on any app from the android app store. Even the 3400mAh battery is well optimised and provides almost 12 hours of screen on time.
The biggest competitor for this phone is the OnePlus 5. It has pretty much the same hardware. However, while the OnePlus 5 has a better camera, the Mi Mix 2 has a better battery life and is way ahead in terms of design.
