'Make in India' smartphone announcements of 2015

The Government's 'Make in India' initiative attracted many smartphone manufacturers to the Indian shores in 2015. Manufacturing hubs of various Chinese and Indian mobile manufacturers shifted base from China to India. Here's a list of all 'Make in India' announcements from smartphone manufacturers in 2015.

Xiaomi 

Xiaomi  announced the initiation of its manufacturing plant in India, out of partner Foxconn’s manufacturing plant in Sri City factory, Andhra Pradesh. As part of the first phone made entirely in India, Xiaomi introduced the Redmi 2 Prime. The Redmi 2 Prime is an enhanced version of the Redmi 2, featuring a Snapdragon 410 quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB storage, 8MP primary camera and 4.7” HD display.

Gionee

Gionee launched its first 'Make in India' smartphone, the Gionee F103 in an event at Vizag. The smartphone has been launched in partnership with Foxconn. The Gionee F103 sports a 5-inch HD IPS display with Dragontrail. It is powered by a quad-core processor clocked at 1.3GHz along with 2GB of RAM. The phone has an 8MP rear camera with flash and 5MP front camera. It is 4G LTE compatible and offers 16GB of internal storage.

Lava

After setting up a manufacturing facility in Noida, Lava announced that it will invest Rs. 500 crores to set up a manufacturing unit in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh. Lava’s International Chief Manufacturing Officer, Sanjeev Agarwal told PTI, “The manufacturing plant, which will be operational in 2017, will target production capacity of five million phones a month once fully functional. " Lava currently produces the Iris X8 and Xolo phones in India.

Asus

Taiwanese manufacturer Asus announced that it has tied up with Foxconn to start manufacturing smartphones in India. In a bid to expand its presence in the rapidly growing Indian smartphone market, it will make the Zenfone 2 Laser and Zenfone Go at Sri City, Andhra Pradesh.

Yu

Back in July, Micromax's sister brand Yu made 1 Lakh units of the Yu Yuphoria as part of the 'Make in India' initiative. All these 1 lakh Yuphoria devices were made in India. The Yu Yuphoria, successor to the Yu Yureka, has a 5-inch 720p display (TFT IPS, 16.7M Color, 294 PPI) with Gorilla Glass 3 protection. The smartphone boasts of metal body and symmetrical design. The Yuphoria is thin at 8.25mm & weighs 143 gm with battery & a screen to TP ratio of over 75%. Micromax has said that it will produce 100% of its smartphone inventory in India by 2018.

Coolpad 

Chinese phone maker, Coolpad had also announced that the company intends to invest around $300 million, approximately Rs. 1,950 crore, for manufacturing handsets in India. It has partnered with Indian electronics major Videocon to produce the devices from its facility in Maharashtra. The first made in India Coolpad phones are expected to be available in the first quarter of 2016.

Oppo

Chinese smartphone manufacturer Oppo has started manufacturing mobile phones at Foxconn’s facility in Sri City. The company had started manufacturing limited quantities of the Joy Plus phone in August to assess the quality of production. According to Feng, setting up Oppo’s own manufacturing facility is also on the cards. The company hopes to achieve that by the end of next year.

Lenovo & Motorola

Lenovo plans to ramp up production of its devices in India. The company is hoping to almost double its local smartphone production to 10 million units a year, at their Chennai manufacturing unit. Currently, Lenovo produces around 6 million units annually, but now the company will increase the number of models produced at the Chennai facility. Besides smartphone production, the company is also aiming to export both Lenovo and Motorola branded smartphones from India. Lenovo is also bringing its customisation programme- Moto Maker, to India.

Vivo

Vivo has also set up a manufacturing facility in Greater Noida. Vivo invested Rs. 125 crore in the first phase of the facility, which will have a capability of producing over 1 million phones per month.

OnePlus

Chinese smartphone maker OnePlus announced that it is partnering with Foxconn to make its smartphones in India. The company has said that the OnePlus X will be the first Made in India device out of the OnePlus India stable.
