Lenovo’s latest Legion range of laptops have been launched in India. The Legion replaces the popular Ideapad Y-series. The new (renamed) range is aimed at gamers and features the latest NVIDIA pascal powered GPUs to keep those fps counters ticking. We had the chance to check out the new machines at launch and here is a closer look of the Lenovo Y520 & Y720 laptops.
We start off with the bigger sibling of the two, the Y720. This is not the direct successor to the Y-series, but more of an upgrade over it. Powered by an Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor and flaunting an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 GPU, the Y720 is VR capable. Here is a quick rundown of the specifications:
Display: 15.6-inch, 1080P, IPS panel
CPU: Intel Core i7-7700HQ
RAM: 16GB
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060
Storage: 128GB SSD + 1TB HDD
Battery: 60Whr
Weight: 3.2Kg
Price: Rs. 1,49,990
Like the specifications, the selection of I/O ports is also pretty satisfying. On the left side you have a kensington lock, the power port, an ethernet jack, a USB 3.0 port (can be used for charging), and a microphone/headphone combo.
On the right, the laptop has two more USB 3.0 ports, an HDMI port, a mini DisplayPort and USB 3.1 Type-C port with Thunderbolt support.
The Lenovo Y720 comes with an RGB keyboard, with the ability to set up different coloured zones. Even the brightness of the backlit keyboard is adjustable.
The touchpad on other hand is non-illuminated, but it does get red accents around it, making it feel in sync with the design. It has a soft touch surface and the two left and right keys are integrated in the touchpad itself.
The display seems decent at first glance. The laptop uses an IPS LCD panel with 1080p resolution. It has a single hinge design, giving the display a floaty feel.
Around the back, the laptop has dual exhausts with orange heat sink grills, with thick black rails protecting it.
Y520
The Lenovo Y520 shares the same design as the Y720 and some internal components as well. However, unlike the Y720, which has a metal lid, the Y520 features a plastic shell, with the same carbon fibre finish. Here are the specifications of the product.
Display: 15.6-inch, 1080P, IPS panel
CPU: Intel Core i7-7700HQ
RAM: 8 / 16GB
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050Ti
Storage: 128GB SSD + 1TB HDD
Weight: 2.4Kg
Price: Rs. 92,490 / Rs. 1,05,101
Like the Y720, the Y520 also has a 1080p IPS display. On first glance it seems to have good viewing angles and decent sunlight legibility.
Both the Lenovo Y720 and Y520 comes with Dolby Atmos software and Lenovo claims it will enhance your gaming experience.
Unlike the Y720 however, the Y520 makes do with a standard red backlit keyboard. Although the backlight on this can also be adjusted.
Also, the touchpad on the Y520 has a slight recess at bottom and offers separate left and right keys.
At the back you get a single exhaust, running along the display hinge of the laptop. The heat sink is again painted orange and is protected by thick black rails.
