Hands On: Huawei Honor Holly

The Huawei Honor Holly is the company's budget offering in the country. The device is priced at Rs. 6,999 and will sell exclusively on Flipkart from October 16 onwards. It has a 720p display along with a 1.3 GHz MediaTek quad-core SoC and a 2000 mAh battery. The main differentiating features of this phone are 16 GB of internal storage and 5 inch display, which is not offered by any other smartphone in this range. It also has 1 GB of RAM.

Display

The Honor Holly has a 720p 5 inch display, which is bigger than both the Xiaomi Redmi 1S and Moto E, the two best smartphones in this range. The display is dim though and looks dull.

Camera

Along with the 2 MP front camera, the Honor 6 has an 8 MP rear camera, similar to the Xiaomi Redmi 1S. The camera seemed acceptable on first impressions, but we'll put out a verdict only after conducting a full review.

Emotion UI

All Huawei phones, including the Honor Holly, run on the Emotion UI. This is Huawei's own UI, layered on top of Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. While the Android version is already a cause for concern, we also need to find out how resource intensive the UI is. Xiaomi's MiUI was a concern on the Redmi 1S.

Removable Back

The smartphone's body is made out of plastic and the back is very glossy, making it feel less premium than the Redmi 1S or Moto E. It has a removable back and battery though, which is a very good thing.

On the right side of the Honor Holly are the volume rocker and power buttons.

Top

The top of the phone is mostly empty, except for the 3.5 mm headphone jack.

Bottom

Like many other smartphones, the micro-USB slot lies at the bottom of the smartphone.

Touch Buttons

Instead of on-screen touch buttons like the Honor 6, Huawei went with the capacitive touch buttons on this smartphone. This begs the question whether the device could have been more compact had there been touch buttons, allowing the company to cut down the bezels.
