Sci-fi, fantasy, action adventure and film adaptations of comic books, they all seem to be doing extremely well on the big screen. We are halfway through 2016 and there are still a lot of great movies to look forward to. So, we at Digit thought we’d list some sci-fi movies that we are looking forward to. To make the list comprehensive, we have thrown in some fantasy films and hard core action movies too.
Star Trek Beyond
It’s sad news that Anton Yelchin, who plays Chekov in the new Star Trek movies has passed away, but it’s one more reason we really want to see the film. The crew of the USS Enterprise is halfway into their five-year mission this time around. They are attacked by a seemingly unstoppable wave of unknown aliens. Can they survive the onslaught?
Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice Ultimate edition
Batman vs Superman received mixed reviews when the film hit the big screen. The Ultimate Edition of the film is available digitally and will be available on Blu-ray soon, with 30 minutes of extra footage. Can 30 minutes turn this into a good movie?
Ghostbusters
This version of Ghostbusters is set 30 years after the original films. All the lead protagonists are women this time. While some may be skeptical about this change, we are quite excited to see how the adventure unfolds. The film stars Melissa McCarthy, who has some great comic skills. Have you seen her in Bridesmaids?
Passengers
What happens when the sleeping chambers of a spacecraft, traveling to a distant colony planet and transporting thousands of people, malfunctions, and two passengers are awakened 60 years early? That’s exactly what this movie will tell you. We do hope it’s not a space romance movie, though.
Resident Evil: The Final Chapter
Resident Evil: The Final Chapter picks up immediately after the events in Resident Evil: Retribution. Humanity is on its last leg and it’s up to Milla Jovovich, AKA, Alice, to save the day. She must return to Raccoon City, the birthplace of this nightmare, while the Umbrella Corporation is gathering its forces to take down the remaining survivors of the apocalypse.
Kubo and the Two Strings
Kubo and the Two Strings is an epic action-adventure set in a fantastical Japan. Kubo lives a normal life in a small village, until certain events unfold. After the mystical events, Kubo must locate a magical suit of armor once worn by his late father, a legendary Samurai warrior, to save the day!
Sly Cooper
We have already seen the launch of the Ratchet and Clank film and it left a sour taste in our mouths. But the silver screen adaptation of the popular video game, Sly Cooper, has raised our hopes once again. Can the thievius raccoonus steal our hearts on the big screen?
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story may have seen some reshoots, but we think that’s for the best. Darth Vader himself will make an appearance in this film, and even though his role will be short, it is something we are anxiously looking forward to. After all, that’s all Force Awakens was missing, right?
The BFG
An animated film directed by Steven Spielberg, based on a book by Roald Dahl. Need we say more?
Assassin's Creed
Film adaptations of video games have been quite disappointing, so our expectations for the Assassin’s Creed Film are low. That said, we’ve come to expect great things off Magneto, AKA, Michael Fassbender.
Equals
A film that explored the idea of an emotionless utopia was Equilibrium. It looks like Equals wants to walk down the same path, but rather than having an action adventure approach it has a more emotional romantic take to it. The reason we are excited to watch this film, though, is because the lead character is played by Nicholas Hoult. We loved him in Mad Max and the rebooted X-Men films.
Suicide Squad
Suicide Squad is another film that underwent a reshoot after being showcased to a test audience. This is reassuring as it shows that the film-makers what to deliver for audience’s expectations. Ben Affleck will reprise his role as the caped crusader in this film and we will finally see Jared Leto’s take on the Joker.
Doctor Strange
Benedict Cumberbatch will take on the role of one of the most powerful characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Need we say more?
The Legend of Tarzan
This isn’t the story of how the jungle boy became the legendary Tarzan, but the tale of how the prince of the jungle had to go back to his roots to save the day. If the trailer of the film is anything to go by, this will be one epic adventure, meant for the big screen.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
It was first introduced in Harry Potter and the Prisioner of Azkaban, and J.K. Rowling later actually published this book, which was a textbook for Harry and gang in the fictional world of Hogwarts. The film seems to have taken things to a whole new level, though. It follows the adventures of Newt Scamander, in New York's secret community of witches and wizards.
Batman: The Killing Joke
Considered as one of the best Batman stories, The Killing Joke follows the origins of the caped crusaders worst enemy – the Joker. The animated film follows the same theme as the comic book. The reason we are excited to see this film is because Mark Hamill and Kevin Conroy reprise their role as the the Joker and Batman respectively.
Jason Bourne
2012’s Bourne Legacy may have been a disappointing film, but that’s probably because it didn’t have Matt Damon as the lead protagonist and the plot was the same tried and tested formula. Personally, I loved the Bourne Ultimatum and I hope the film can live up to the legacy (pun intended), that the original trilogy created.
Inferno
Based on the novel by Dan Brown, Inferno follows symbology professor Robert Langdon, working his way to unravel the secrets of a virus built on the foundation of the seven deadly sins. They need to work on a making him more like Indiana Jones, though.
The Circle
Little is known about this Sci-fi Tom Hanks movie and the descriptor of the movie reads, “A woman lands a job at a powerful tech company called the Circle, where she becomes involved with a mysterious man”.
Patient Zero
If you were looking for a crossover between Resident Evil and I am Legend, then Patient Zero may be the answer. Of course, we aren’t certain yet, since we haven’t seen the movie, but that’s what we derived after reading the synopsis.
