Did you know the first ever GSM phone call was made from a Nokia phone, from a Nokia network? Not just that, the world’s first mobile phone satellite call was also made from a Nokia phone. In fact, according to Nokia’s website, it owns a third of the patents essential to GSM standards, and a about a fourth of the patents needed for WCDMA standards.
Nokia 5110
Introduced in 1998, the Nokia 5110 was built like a tank and meant to be a simple, functional mobile phone. It has a 84x48 pixel monochrome display.
Nokia 1100/1110
One of the top-selling mobile phones of all times, the Nokia 1100 and 1110 were known for their uber long battery life and sturdiness. They had rubberised bodies, and the legendary Snake game.
Nokia 3300/3310
Are you careless? Do you drop your phone often? Like using your phone as a projectile to hit those you don't like? Well, this is the phone for you. This one is also amongst the most selling mobile phones in the market.
Nokia 2600
Combining things from the 3310 an 1110, Nokia came out with the Nokia 2600. It had a coloured display, polyphonic ringtones and more.
Nokia 5200
This may have been the phone that the Samsung Corby was based on. It's a slider, though, and while there are navigation buttons on the front, it has slides up to reveal a keypad.
Nokia 6600
One of the most popular Nokia smartphones in India, the Nokia 6600 wasn't cheap at its time. It was, howeever, the talk of the town. Anyone who owned it would show it off, and those who didn't, were jealous.
Nokia 9500
Nokia's mobile phone for business users was the Nokia 9500 Communicator. It flipped open like a book, revealing a large screen, a full-sized QWERTY keyboart and more.
Nokia E71
Speaking of business-centric phones. This one had perhaps the best QWERTY keyboard apart from BlackBerry devices. The Nokia E71 was one popular device in India, and while it was meant for business users, it attracted many more.
Nokia N-Gage
Perhaps the first phone made specifically for gamers. The Nokia N-Gage and N-Gage QD didn't do very well, but they were dream phones for some geeks. Built like a controller, it was arguably the best gaming phone of its time.
Nokia N91
This phone had music controls on the front, and a sliding mechanism to reveal the keyboard. It also had a huge (for its time) colour display, and was capable of running the best games of its time.
Sometimes it takes just one bad decision to lead to one's downfall. The Lumia 610 was the first Windows-based smartphone that Nokia came out with, and it was downhill from there.
Its journey with Windows still had some positives. The Nokia Lumia 920 was built like a tank, and it showed that smartphones could be sturdy, and plastic could still feel premium.
Where the 920 was a breakthrough in build quality, the Lumia 1020 was a breakthrough for smartphone cameras. It pushed the megapixel count to a whopping 41 megapixels, and can go toe-to-toe with some of the best camera phones in the market, even today.
When its efforts with Windows-based smartphones had failed, Nokia took a shot at Android. This, it did with the Nokia X smartphone. However, the company tried to mould Android to look and feel like Windows, and that didn't sit well with customers or developers.
The much awaited return of Nokia...
Nokia is set to return to the smartphone market in 2017. According to reports, the company will return with at least two Android smartpohnes, one of which may have a QHD display.
