MCC Jumbo i9 – packs a punch with 45 days standby-time Review

Updated on 01-Aug-2023
VERDICT:

The MCC Jumbo i9 is a feature-rich dual-SIM budget cellphone, with its long battery life being the top selling point. Although it does not impress with its average performance, it still packs a punch within this price category. At Rs. 2,599, it makes a decent buy and gives you good value for money.

The Jumbo i9 is quite bulky owing to the larger capacity battery rated 1800 mAh incorporated into it. It has an attractive human body curve design, coated with a glossy grey and black finish. The glossy black plastic strip running across the body contours adds a nice contrast against the all-grey plastic body. It has an LED torch at the top and a power port on the bottom surface of the cellphone.

The keypad layout incorporates a bevelled key design with narrow ridges separating each row of keys from the other. The keys are arranged linearly in sets of three in each row. The ring structured control dial includes navigation controls and centre select button, sandwiched between the keypad and the LCD screen. Although, the bevelled key design enables comfortable finger navigation, the hard-touch keys aren’t very responsive to the user input and often forces the user to re-register the input. The tactile feedback is just ordinary and does not yield accurate results. Overall, the keypad and user interface ergonomics is just average, failing to make an impression. The battery cover is of cheap build quality and lacks flexibility, often hurting the fingers while removing it. Removing the battery cover and the battery reveals two GSM SIM slots and one microSD memory slot.

Performance

[RELATED_ARTICLE]The Jumbo i9 had an ordinary outing in the signal reception and voice clarity test. Although, it got average scores across zone one and zone two, there was evidence of choppy and wavering voice clarity across zone 3. The loudspeaker produced a lot of distortion even at medium volumes and hence defeated the purpose of its usage in noisy environments. At the same time, the hands-free voice clarity looked good at volumes less than 75% and exhibited distortion above this limit. The feeble call volume while using the hands-free, posed some audibility issues in noisy environments. There was nothing special in the camera test, with the images looking ordinary and lacking both the colour depth & crispness. The multimedia test yielded satisfactory results, with the bundled earphones delivering better sound reproduction and clarity than the loudspeaker. The display test results were just average, with limited viewing angles being the major weak point. Overall, the Jumbo i9 is an average performer that just gets the job done.
