boAt Immortal Katana Blade Review: Stylish, very gamer-oriented and eye-catching
- Gamer aesthetic
- Mic good for the price
- Intuitive touch controls
- Long-lasting battery life
- Large Case
- Ear comfort and security low due to lack of ear tips
- Overwhelmingly bassy sound profile
- No app to make any adjustments
The boAt Immortal Katana Blade is sort of like the Burj Khalifa. You know, the tallest building in the world. It is awesome to look at and definitely has a WOW factor to it, but when it comes to practicality and usability, it more or less falls short. This is why we would recommend these earphones, only if you know you have fairly large ear canals and don’t mind a fairly bass-heavy (almost overpowering) sound profile.
The boAt Immortal Katana Blade TWS earphones were just dropped off at the Digit Test Labs and we played around with it to tell you if you should save your money or row, row, row away with the boAt Immortal Katana Blade in your pocket.
Build & Design
Anyone who has seen and held the boAt Immortal Katana Blade TWS will be able to tell you this one fact. boAt has gone all out when it comes to the design of this model. Now that does not mean it is for everyone though. It is a bit over the top and to some, it may even seem gaudy. But it is very much in line with the gamer aesthetic it is going for and young gamers or even kids would like this device.
Well, we say kids would like the Katana Blade but only when it comes to the looks of the charging case. Because the buds are a completely different story. The buds inside do not have any design flair at all and look very basic. They have a stem-style design and no option for silicone ear tips. That would be fine if the solid ear tips were small but the Immortal Katana Blade has enormously bulging ear tips that are definitely not for the small ear canal-ed individuals out there.
The fit is okay. It does not feel overly secure while wearing which would make the more paranoid individuals among us (a.k.a Me) feel constantly worried that the buds would fall off at any time. Because the earbuds are so big, it also means that they do not form a nice seal around the ear to give you good passive noise isolation.
And I personally had a very odd experience with them where the right earbud fit decently well and formed what I would call the bare minimum of a seal. But the Left earbud just would not fit comfortably and felt like it was constantly hanging from my ear canal rather than being wedged in there. That also meant that there was absolutely no noise isolation on my left earbud giving me a pseudo-environmental pass-through. Honestly, it was a bit disorientating at first because it felt very unbalanced and made me increase the volume to compensate but when I did that, the right earbud was a bit too loud to be comfortable.
My body abnormalities aside, these earbuds would honestly have fared so much better if they had just added silicone ear tips to give it universal compatibility with all ear types. And that is why these earphones can’t be recommended for kids at all.
Okay so now that we have got that rant out of the way, let’s get back to the positives of the boAt Immortal Katana Blade which mostly revolve around the way it looks, feels, and how eye-catching it is. The charging case is rectangular and a bit bulky. Not too much but you’d definitely notice it in your pocket and if you are wearing tight pants, it might even feel a bit uncomfortable.
There are 4 RGB LED lights on each of the corners and two more are revealed when you slide up the lid to access the earbuds. The style of the LED lights can be controlled by pressing a button that is placed next to the USB-C charging port. You can also use that button to adjust the sound effect.
Yes, sound effects. Every time you open the slide to get to the earbuds, it makes a swishing sound like a sword being slashed and every time you slide it back into the closed position it makes the sound of a sword being sheathed. You know, because it’s called the boAt Immortal “Katana Blade”. It makes you wonder though. Why don’t the Airdopes have themed sound effects as well?
Features & Performance – boAt Immortal Katana Blade TWS
Considering the reasonable price, the boAt Immortal Katana Blade is not what you would call sparse in terms of the features it has on offer. It has USB-C ASAP Charging, a claimed 50 hours of playtime and Bluetooth v5.3.
In terms of battery life, I have been using the earphones for about an hour a day for the last 5 days without topping them up and they are still going just fine. boAt also claims that the ASAP Charging tech provides 180 minutes of playtime in just 10 minutes on charge which is pretty decent as well.
On top of all of that, the Immortal Katana Blade comes with something called Beast Mode which brings the latency down to 50ms which can help with gaming, not that it really needs it, because even without Beast Mode turned on, the latency was pretty low and there isn’t really a noticeable difference when Beast Mode is turned on.
The Beast Mode can be activated using the touch-sensitive surfaces on the earbuds which can also be used to control the other basic operations like volume control, pause/play/next/previous music.
When it comes to the performance the boAt Immortal Katana Blade has a bass-biased and dark sound profile. It heavily emphasises the entire bass region of the frequency graph, which could cause some muddiness in the sound. Furthermore, it has a dark sound profile.
For the uninitiated, a dark sound profile is one that follows a descending line — so the bass region is the most emphasised, the mids are emphasised a bit less, and the treble has the least emphasis. This kind of sound profile can cause severe auditory masking, meaning the mids and highs will tend to get drowned out by the foreboding bass response.
This kind of sound profile usually only pairs well with dance, rap, and hip- hop music. Classical or rock music could lose its essence due to the subdued mids and highs.
Verdict
In conclusion, the boAt Immortal Katana Blade is sort of like the Burj Khalifa.
