Brainwavz BLU-100 Review : Great value, solid performance

Updated on 01-Aug-2023
VERDICT:

We would peg pure audio performance to be in the region of the SoundMAGIC E10M or E10S. These are wired headphones costing about seventy percent of the asking price of the BLU-100, which means the Branwavz BLU-100 offers excellent performance for the price; with the added bonus of being wireless. The only two downers are: four-hour battery life and in-frequent skipping. If later versions improve on these two aspects while maintaining the price point we’d have a near flawless product.

Lets look at what this emerging product category entails: when they say “wireless” these headphones aren’t completely devoid of cables. One driver is indeed connected to the other with a cable and the housing makes room to pack in a tiny battery. In contrast, the other product which we mentioned in the intro – the Dash IEM by Bragi – is a little different. On the Dash IEM the two drivers are paired to each other wirelessly; so no wires at all. Till such products eventually become more mainstream we have in-ears that at least have wireless connectivity with the source. Eliminating that one long cable going to your phone is much of battle won.
Coming to the Brainwavz BLU-100, we were pleasantly surprised by the audio performance. Aside of a slight bump on the lower mids, the entire frequency range is represented quite nicely. I figure the aptX codec is doing a good job of optimising playback on the bluetooth protocol.

The build quality isn’t bad either. You have a flat cable connecting the two drivers and in-line control pod for volume up/down and call answer. The buttons are good quality with great tactile feedback in order to operate without looking. The fit is snug and comfy while isolation cuts off major ambient disturbances.
