DataWind reaches the target it had promised for the Prime Minister’s ‘Make in India’ campaign by shipping 80,000 tablets and smartphones.

DataWind, the manufacturer of low-cost, internet enabled devices, has announced that it shipped 80,000 tablets and smartphones from its facility in Amritsar, which opened last month. The shipment matched the target that was set in accordance with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ campaign.

DataWind Inc. (TSX: DW), a leading provider of low cost internet connectivity and wireless web access products, has shipped the first 80,000 Internet-enabled tablets and smartphones from its new production facility that opened earlier last month in Amritsar.
 
After establishing India’s first and only manufacturing facility for touch panels in 2013, now by producing the majority of its products in India, DataWind has taken a major step in the direction of realizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Vision of ‘Make in India’.
 
“By producing state-of-the-art and most affordable devices in India, we not only wish to supply products that would make Indians proud, but boost Skills India by generating highly skilled employment locally” said Suneet Singh Tuli, President & CEO of DataWind Inc.   The Company expects to continue expanding its dominant position in the Tablet PC market by increasing the range of products manufactured at the Amritsar facility.
 
“The economics of this move to India are also supported by the growing demand for our products– all of which come bundled with one year of pre-paid Internet access in India on the Reliance network.  By providing the most affordable internet access solution in the country, we expect to take the Digital India initiative to the next stage by insuring every citizen has access to education, commerce and government services.” said Tuli.
 
DataWind’s patented technology allows for the wireless delivery of a basic internet experience across existing network infrastructure at a fraction of the typical cost and bandwidth.
 
The company’s Internet-enabled smartphones and tablets are priced to be affordable by the millions of people in emerging markets who do not have Internet access.
