HIGHLIGHTS

With fingerprint scanners featuring on flagship smartphones, it's expected the technology will soon hit the wearable devices.

After having launched on the high end smartphones, fingerprint technology is soon going to hit the wearable devices. According to CEO Rick Bergman, fingerprint technology may be available on wearable devices by next year.

Synaptics is well-known company that provides human interface solutions for consumer electronics companies. The company currently provides fingerprint technology only to Samsung, which has launched the feature on its latest flagship Galaxy S5. Bergman's comments have triggered speculations that Samsung could be among the first brands to incorporate fingerprint sensors on its wearable devices.

Addressing the media at the Computex 2014 in Taipei, Bergman said “Using fingerprint ID sensors for a small curved display is not a big challenge.” It's notable Samsung is the only company that has launched a curved display wearable – Galaxy Gear Fit

Synaptics' first small area-type fingerprint sensors is slated to be unveiled in the second half of 2014. The area-type sensors is supposed to work the same way as TouchUI – which means user need to place finger over them rather than swiping it. The technology will be initially implemented in the smartphones and tablets and then other devices thereafter.
