Super Mario gets $18,950 watch to celebrate 30th anniversary
It's Mario's and the Nintendo Entertainment System's 30th anniversary, so anything goes!
You know how you always wanted Mario the Plumber on your wrist? Well, okay, you may not have wanted it, but now that you know it is possible, you may want to. Well, it’s going to set you back by only about $18,950 (approx. Rs. 12,59,606). Clearly, affordability wasn’t a factor for Romain Jerome, the luxury watchmaker, who unveiled the RJ X Super Mario Bros. watch. You’re probably thinking that it’s a smartwatch, but it’s not. The standard timepiece simply has a Super Mario Bros. design, and has been made to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the game. Needless to say, it’s made for the really rich geeks of this world.
On the watchface, you’ll find Mario himself, along with the legendary mushroom that made Mario tall, and the cloud and bushes from the game. It has a 46mm case and the company’s signature RJ wristband along with its own branding on the watchface. If the price didn’t make the watch exclusive enough, Romain Jerome is producing only 85 units of the watch, and only 85 individuals can own it. The number 85 is a nod to the fact that Super Mario Bros. was originally launched in 1985.
The Mario watch (as we choose to call it) isn’t the only video game-themed watch that Romain Jerome has produced. If you’re a fan of Tetris, Space Invaders or Pac-Man, the company has also designed watches themed on these games.
Interestingly, Super Mario Bros. isn’t the only Nintendo product that turned 30. The company’s Nintendo Entertainment System, which is what Mario was built on, also turned 30 recently. Despite the celebrations, though, the iconic gaming company has been going through tough times of late. The advent of mobile gaming has forced the once-console giant to bring its games to mobile devices, like smartphones and tablets. The first of these debuts in March, 2016.
If this watch is too expensive for you, which it most likely is, you could enjoy this Super Mario and Sons video from AIB.
