TAG Heuer, Google and Intel unveil a new luxury smartwatch
TAG Heuer has unveiled a new smartwatch running Intel processor and Google's Android Wear operating system.
TAG Heuer, Google, and Intel have announced a partnership to launch a Swiss smartwatch powered by Intel and Android Wear.
The collaboration was made official at Baselworld, during a press conference held on Thursday 19th March. Together, these companies will build a product that equally focusses on luxury and technology (connectivity).
David Singleton, Director of Engineering for Android Wear says: “By fusing beauty with technology, the Swiss watch has inspired generations of artists and engineers alike—including us at Google. So we’re thrilled to be working with TAG Heuer and Intel to bring a unique blend of emotion and innovation to the luxury market. Together, and using the Android Wear platform, we can imagine a better, beautiful, smarter watch.”
Michael Bell, Corporate Vice President and General Manager of Intel’s New Devices Group, adds: “As we work to enable technology experiences that provide greater utility and value to people, Intel is confident that a collective approach will inspire new innovation in wearable technology. The collaboration with TAG Heuer and Google brings us closer to realizing the vision of wearable technology with a distinctive smartwatch that elevates the category.”
Growing popularity of smartwatches have compelled the traditional luxury watch brands to explore the segment. Recently, Timex launched IRONMAN Run x50+ smartwatch. While the traditional watch makers have an advantage of design and long presence in the market, smartphone companies now foraying in the wearables tech segment are struggling to deliver a product that meets both the requirements – technology and looks.
That said there have been several attempts at delivering this – Moto 360, LG G Watch R and the latest Apple's Apple Watch. One of such smart watches that impressed us is LG's Watch Urbane smartwatch. The wearable has been just announced in India. Read: First Impressions: LG Watch Urbane
It'll be really interesting to see how traditional watch brands survive the wave of change in the wearable segment. We are hoping more such collaborations in the near future.
