Sony’s new clip-on display will make any glasses smarter
Sony's new display kit can change any pair of specs into a Google Glass rival.
Sony has announced a new attachable display module that can turn any existing pair of eyewear into smartglasses akin to Google Glass.
Sony's new display module is powered by an ARM Cortex-A7 Processor. It has 640 x 400 OLED micro display that hovers in front of your eye and doubles as a screen. The display comes with a control board with Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity. It has compass, accelerometer and touch sensors. The unit weighs under 2 ounces, and according to Sony is fairly easy to attach and remove.
The display module seems like a more practical approach than Google Glass for some applications. Users will have the option to switch to their regular eyewear say while playing sports or driving but still carry their smart glasses with them. Sony states that the Google Glass competitor can make a "pair of fashionable glasses, goggles, sunglasses, or other type of eyewear" into smartglasses. The electronics giant says that the wearable could be used for work, sports and entertainment, so it will provide "partner organizations" with an SDK to produce whatever apps they choose.
Sony will be unveil the display at CES in January 2015. The company says that it will begin mass production in 2015 so ideally users will get their hands on this device by 2016. No details about the pricing have been revealed yet.
