Samsung developing its own VR headset: Reports
HIGHLIGHTS

Some reports suggest that Samsung may announce its own VR headset this year and it will be less expensive compared to Oculus Rift or Sony's Project Morpheus.

According to reports, Samsung is working on a virtual reality headset that will be announced later this year. A report states that unnamed developers have already made prototype versions of the headset, which are powered by Samsung’s Galaxy devices. However, the final consumer model will run on a next-generation Galaxy smartphone and/or tablet.

Samsung’s rumored virtual reality device will have an OLED screen. No details have been mentioned on how the headset will sync up with a phone or a tablet, or whether it will require a separate camera to track depth. According to sources, the device will connect with phones and tablets via a wire so that users can play Android games in a virtual world. However the current games will not work properly on the headset and developers would have to build games specifically for Samsung’s device.

According to Engadget, Samsung is planning to beat out the competition by launching the product this year and at a lesser expensive price than Oculus Rift and Sony’s Project Morpheus. Samsung refused to comment and said “Samsung doesn’t comment on rumor and speculation.”

Facebook had acquired the virtual reality firm Oculus Rift earlier this year for $2 Billion. According to reports, “Facebook plans to use Oculus’ technologies to expand in communications, media and entertainment, education and other areas.”

Sony’s Project Morpheus was announced in March by president of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida. The headset will use Sony’s 3D audio technology that recreates positional sound, “such as footsteps climbing up stairs below them, or engine noises of helicopters flying overhead.” Sounds will change along with players’ head orientation “”creating a highly realistic audio environment within an immersive 360-degree virtual world.” The device will bring VR gaming and non-gaming software to Sony’s new console, the PlayStation 4.
