Samsung will reportedly bring back the square-shaped design for its smartwatches after more than ten years since they first introduced it. Some of you might remember the first Samsung Galaxy Gear from 2013, which had a square 1.6-inch display like many other smartwatches back then.
If you’ve only started using Samsung smartwatches recently, you might be more familiar with the round design that’s been popularised with the Galaxy Watch.

According to a report by SamMobile, Samsung is thinking about reintroducing the square design for its smartwatches. This design would be similar to the older models such as the Galaxy Gear, Gear 2 and Gear Live, which came out more than ten years ago. Since then, Samsung’s circular smartwatches have become more popular and taken the spotlight.

The Gear S2 marked Samsung’s shift to circular smartwatch design, featuring a physical rotating bezel. Since then, Samsung has continued with this design style.
It’s currently unclear whether Samsung will introduce the square design with the upcoming Galaxy Watch 7 series or if they’ll wait for another year before making such a significant design change.
It seems that internally, Samsung is seriously considering the idea and is likely to make the switch to the square design. It will be intriguing to see how Samsung executes this change and persuades customers to embrace it once again, especially since many have grown fond of the circular design of the Galaxy Watch series.
In related news, Samsung recently unveiled the prototype of its new wearable– the Samsung Galaxy Ring– at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024 in Barcelona. There is a lot of buzz for this wearable device. It is expected that in the coming future, smart rings will take over our smartwatches.
