As technology continues to evolve, many of us find ourselves captivated by the possibilities of augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR). With Meta unveiling new AR glasses and a more affordable mixed-reality headset, it seems like Apple is feeling the pressure to rethink its strategy for the Vision Pro headset. This situation raises questions about how Apple can adapt to a rapidly changing market.

The Vision Pro, despite its impressive technology and sleek design, faces significant challenges. Priced at $3,500, it’s a tough sell for most consumers, especially when Meta’s Quest 3S headset starts at just $299. While the Vision Pro offers a fantastic immersive experience, turning any room into a virtual movie theatre, it lacks compelling reasons for consumers to choose it over other devices like computers or gaming consoles. The absence of a robust third-party app ecosystem and the discomfort of prolonged wear further complicates its appeal.

Meta’s recent advancements, particularly the Orion AR glasses prototype, highlight the gap between the two companies. With a 70-degree field of view and intuitive controls, Orion promises a more practical and wearable experience, potentially making smartphones obsolete. Although still in development, it shows Meta’s commitment to bringing AR closer to everyday use.

According to a report by Bloomberg, Apple is exploring several options to improve its headset offerings. One possibility is to create a less expensive version of the Vision Pro by using cheaper materials and components. Another option involves shifting many functions to the iPhone, reducing the headset’s weight and cost. Apple is also considering developing smart glasses that could integrate seamlessly with its existing ecosystem. Moreover, the tech giant is considering a new version of the AirPods Pro equipped with external cameras and artificial intelligence. This design aims to enhance users’ awareness of their surroundings by providing real-time information about the outside world.

The ultimate goal for Apple could be standalone AR glasses that combine advanced technology in a lightweight design. However, this ambitious vision remains a work in progress, and the company must accelerate its efforts to remain competitive.
