LG plans to develop a new range of smartwatches based on WebOS, it bought from Hewlett-Packard.
LG and Audi collaboration showed a glimpse of a beautiful wearable at the CES 2015 based on WebOS. Although the smartwatch was dubbed as a prototype, people familiar with the project are saying that the electronics giant is planning to launch a new smartwatch lineup based on WebOS in 2016.
According to Android Central, the new watch is based on webOS and will be able to connect to cellular data networks, so you won't need to depend on Wi-Fi or a nearby smartphone to use it similar to the Samsung Gear S. LG smartwatch has built-in apps including a dialer and a messages app. It also comes with a Music, calendar, email, and a health-oriented app. According to reports the device's build quality is superior to LG's past Android Wear-based smartwatches.
LG had bought webOS software from HP in 2013 and has adopted the OS in a variety of products, including televisions, and is also considering using the platform for its home appliances, according to sources.
“We’re going to slowly try to build an (software) ecosystem around areas we can have more control over,” the person said on the sidelines of the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
The person stated that while the company was adopting WebOS for its wearable's abs televisions, Android would remain the major platform for LG’s mobile devices in the near future “It isn’t a technology issue. There is a prevailing system and people are used to that, which is hard to change,” the person said.
