Lenovo files patent for Google Glass-like wearable
Lenovo patents their own version of the Google Glass.
Lenovo has just filed a basic patent for an “Electronic Device And Sound Capturing Method.” The patent application appears on the USPTO website and looks quiet similar to Google Glass.
According to a summary of the patent, Lenovo says that it wanted patent protection for the device in China in 2012. The USPTO published the 20-page application, which has two drawings of the device.
The wearable has a headset design with dual screens and touch-based navigation. Lenovo is using a bone-conducting microphone just above your nose bridge, that would make it easier to catch your voice since you wouldn't have to compete with outside sounds for attention. This also offers an extra level of privacy for internet calls, as you could speak quietly and still get your message across.
The diagrams note a "display module," an "optical system" and more than one "guiding components." Lenovo says in its application, "[I]t is desired to provide a new portable electronic device to free both hands of the user, to change the operation gesture of the user, and to bring a better user experience to the user while reducing the occupied space."
The Lenovo Glass will compete with Google Glass and Samsung Galaxy Gear Glass. According to reports, Samsung is planning to launch its Galaxy Gear Glass at the IFA 2014 event in Berlin in September. No information about the specifications and the price of the device has been revealed yet. The Google Glass is currently available to US customers for $1500 in Beta.
