Xiaomi Mi Band is world’s second most shipped wearable: IDC

HIGHLIGHTS

2.8 million units of the Xiaomi's Rs 999 Mi Band were shipped in Q1,2015.

Xiaomi has become the world’s second largest seller of wearables. According to a latest report Xiaomi’s Rs 999 ( $15) Mi Band fitness band is the second most shipped wearable device across the world.

Xiaomi shipped 2.8 million units of the Mi Band in Q1, 2015. Fitbit which is on  the number one spot shipped 3.9 million units in Q1,2015. Xiaomi Mi Band is made by Huami Technologies which also makes Xiaomi’s smart scale. The Mi Band comes with fitness and sleep tracking functions and can also be paired with your smartphone to receive alerts. It has a water and dust resistant display and lasts for 30 days with a single recharge. The band can be paired with both Android and iOS devices. Here our review of the Mi Band. Most of the products Xiaomi sells on its e-commerce website are made by third parties. Xiaomi invests in these firms and provides them with extra resources for engineering as well as logistics necessary to manufacture the units. Xiaomi benefits from this arrangement by earning access to data from Mi Band users, as well as gets a cut in the sales.

According to a report in Quartz, “The product hit the market last August in mainland China, and since then has spread to India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. On Monday, it finally hit US and European shores, among the first Xiaomi products to reach the West. Despite its name and branding, the Mi Band isn’t actually a Xiaomi product. It’s made by Huami Technologies, a separate company with its own CEO. In addition to the Mi Band, Huami also makes Xiaomi’s smart scale," the report adds.

IDC also stated that the worldwide wearable device market had its eighth consecutive quarter of steady growth in the Q1,2015. According to the company's (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Wearable Device Tracker, a total of 11.4 million wearables were shipped in 1Q15, a 200.0% increase from the 3.8 million wearables shipped in 1Q14. "Bucking the post-holiday decline normally associated with the first quarter is a strong sign for the wearables market," said Ramon Llamas, research manager, Wearables. "It demonstrates growing end-user interest and the vendors' ability to deliver a diversity of devices and experiences. In addition, demand from emerging markets is on the rise and vendors are eager to meet these new opportunities." He added that Apple Watch's arrival will drive competition and improve sales in wearable gadgets. "What remains to be seen is how Apple's arrival will change the landscape," added Llamas. "The Apple Watch will likely become the device that other wearables will be measured against, fairly or not. This will force the competition to up their game in order to stay on the leading edge of the market."
