The much awaited virtual reality headset from HTC- HTC Vive, will be available for pre-orders starting February 29. The pricing details for the same have still not been announced. HTC’s VR headset, the HTC Vive, which was made in collaboration with Valve, had earlier won the “Best hardware (incl. Peripheral category)” award at Gamescom 2015. The headset was scheduled for a late 2015 release, but HTC was still banking on some big developments in the headset and subsequently delayed the launch of the Vive.
The big announcement from HTC happened earlier this month at CES 2016 consumer technology show. HTC has now added a camera module to the headset and using this, the wearer will be able to see objects in the room to avoid collision. The objects gets ghosted to the virtual reality environment, and this feature is being looked at as a boon for one of the most functional problems with VR.
At CES 2016, rival VR company, Oculus also announced the price and availability of the Oculus Rift VR headset. The consumer model of the Oculus Rift is priced at a whopping $600, but the company says the prices will come down eventually. considering this, we can expect the HTC Vive to be priced on the same lines.
The HTC Vive headset is known for its room scaling capabilities. We, at Digit, had an opportunity of experiencing the HTV Vive at a company event, earlier this year. "The environment is as immersive as any VR headset, but the fact that you can move around just makes it that much easier to forget the real world around you," says an extract from our reviewer's experience.
