A new Google Glass app can detect emotions, age and gender
HIGHLIGHTS

German scientists develop SHORE software for Google Glass that can measure human emotions by analyzing their facial expressions.

Google Glass can now detect a persons emotions whether he is sad, happy, angry, excited or nervous, gender and even age with the help of Sophisticated High Speed Object Recognition (SHORE) app.

The app has been developed by a team of researchers and engineers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits. The one of a kind app is capable of guessing person's emotions, gender and age and using the integrated camera in Google Glass, but it cannot determine their identity. The researchers added that the application was ‘trained’ by accessing a database of more than 10,000 annotated faces and can be used on desktop computers as well.

Researchers state that with the SHORE technology, they will be able to help people suffering from autism in understanding facial expressions. The results calculated by the app can be superimposed on the display using augmented reality technique and visually impaired people will be able to receive the same information through audio signals.

"This opens up an entire spectrum of new smart eye-wear applications, including communication aids for people with disorders such as autism, many of whom have difficulty interpreting emotions through facial expressions," its developers from Germany-based Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits were quoted as saying.

The software could be used in other applications such as interactive games or market research analyses, by taking advantage of the additional capability to determine someone's gender or estimate their age.

Samsung is planning to launch its Galaxy Gear Glass this month at the IFA event in Berlin. According to reports the Gear Glass will run on Samsung's Tizen OS and will come with a Bluetooth earpiece with a heads-up display. Samsung has not revealed any other details about the wearable yet.
