Asus has ambitious plans for its next Zenwatch 2. According to reports, the smartwatch will feature a seven day battery life.
The ZenWatch 2 is expected to be launched sometime in Q3 this year. According to rumors, the wearable will come with a built-in SIM-card for voice calling without the need of a paired smartphone similar to the Samsung Galaxy Gear S. ASUS is planning to build a custom chipset coupled with custom software to improve the devices battery life.
All modern smartwatches are using Snapdragon 400 SoC which are meant for smartphones and/or tablets, there is a lot of room for improvement in the wearable segment. MediaTek and Qualcomm are already working on a “simplified” SoCs which could extend the battery life of wearables to 7 days.
ASUS Chairman, Jonney Shih had revealed the company's plan for the smartwatch at the company’s year-end party. Shih stated, “The ZenWatch is defined by us as a companion of a smartphone, and we think it still has a lot of room for improvement.”
"As a companion device, its central processing unit and operating system should be more simplified than the current version, so that I can use it for up to seven days on one charge, rather than for just two days," said Jonney Shih.
Asus's current ZenWatch features a 1.63-inch AMOLED touch display and is powered by a 1.2GHz Snapdragon 400 processor. It has 512MB of RAM, and 4GB of built-in storage. Connectivity options included are Bluetooth v4.0 and micro-USB charging.
