Computex 2015: Asus Zenwatch 2 unveiled
Asus announces ZenWatch 2 with a new magnetic charger, metal crown as well as a choice of sizes and colors.
Asus has announced the new ZenWatch 2 at the company's "Zensation" event in Taipei. The wearable comes with a metal crown and is available in a choice of two sizes and three colors – rose gold, silver and gunmetal.
The Asus ZenWatch 2 has a similar design as ASUS' first Android smartwatch, but comes with a new magnetic charging setup that ASUS claims allows for faster charging and will "dramatically improve recharging times". The smartwatch runs on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop OS, a Qualcomm SoC, an AMOLED display with a curved Gorilla Glass 3 protection and has an improved water and dust resistance body. The original ZenWatch had an IP55 rating, while in the ZenWatch 2 has a higher IP67 rating for superior water submersion protection. ASUS has also bundled a new "wellness" app for health tracking and a "Watch Face Land" app on the wearable. It also comes with a remote camera viewfinder that allow users with ASUS phones to see a preview of their photos on-screen before shooting.
The ZenWatch 2 smartwatch will be available in two sizes, a smaller one at 45 x 37mm which fits 18mm bands and a larger model measuring 49 x 41mm that takes 22mm watch bands. The larger model also comes with a tiny battery power pack that can charge your phone. It will be available in three body colors- silver, gunmetal and rose gold. Apart from this ASUS says there's a total of 18 different watch-plus-strap combos, "premium leather" straps as well as new stainless steel strap options. ASUS has also partnered with Swarovski to include "a gorgeous leather strap with an embossed diamond pattern and tastefully accented with Swarovski crystals." Asus hasn't revealed the pricing or the release date of the smartwatch yet, but has committed to an early Q3 launch for its new wearable.
In April, Asus had announced the Vivowatch with a stainless steel design and an extended ten day battery life. The wearable comes with a black and white power saving display and has inbuilt sleep tracking and heart-rate monitoring features. Asus CEO has been hinting at a new power saving OS and the smartwatch is expected to run it. "The major concern is about saving power," Shen was reported as saying. "We will continue to work with Google on Android Wear, and we will have another [ZenWatch] that is not based on Android Wear and features a longer battery life."
