How did the Apple Watch save this skier?

The incident occurred in the Steven’s Pass area of the Cascade Range of Washington in the United States. On 22 January 2025, a skier fell 1,000 feet down a snowy slope. He wouldn’t have survived if it hadn’t been for his Apple Watch that helped track his location. He fell down and suffered a leg injury.

As soon as the Apple Watch detected a hard fall its Emergency SOS feature got triggered and it shared the skier’s exact coordinates and location with the rescue team and he didn’t even have to do anything. Chelan County Sheriff’s Office got the exact location and then the King County Sheriff’s Air Support Unit went out to find him. He was rescued just after sunset before things got bad.

Apple Watches, particularly the Apple Watch 10 series and Ultra 2 models, come equipped with advanced safety features like Emergency SOS, Crash Detection, Fall Detection, and International Emergency Calling. It was these tools that helped save the man’s life. Rescue videos are going viral on social media. In the past also we have heard cases where the Apple Watch helped detect a heart attack. All of these cases are creating awareness about how helpful these small tech devices can be and how technology can indeed be used for our benefit.
