Highlights
At CES 2019, Panasonic has announced the launch of its GZ2000 4K OLED TVs. The TVs will be available in 55-inch 65-inch screen sizes. Panasonic says that the TVs utilise a “professional edition” panel. This panel has been tuned to perfection in Hollywood by colorist Stefan Sonnenfeld. Panasonic claims that the GZ2000 is the world’s first TV with built-in upward-firing speakers capable of delivering Dolby Atmos audio. The audio system of the TV has also been tuned by Technics engineers. This isn’t the first time we have seen a TV boast of Dolby Atmos sound. LG has been touting the technology for two years now, however we haven’t experienced height enabled channel separation on the LG TVs that we have reviewed.
The GZ2000’s HDR OLED panel is powered by Panasonic’s HCX PRO Intelligent Processor. Speaking of smart UI, the TV is running the company’s own Home Screen 4.0. We recently reviewed the Panasonic FX-800D which is a 4K LED TV. You can check out our review of the TV here.
The press release sent to us by Panasonic does not highlight whether the TV supports the new HDMI 2.1 standard or not. According to Tech Radar, the TV does not support HDMI 2.1 which is a bummer especially if you are one looking forward to higher frame rate content on the TV or a variable refresh rate for gaming.
There is also no 8K offering from the company. Granted, 8K adoption is a while away but Sony, Samsung and LG have all showcased their 8K offerings at CES 2019.
Even though Panasonic isn’t bringing the smart bells and whistles that come with a flagship TV, they do have one ace up their sleeves – picture quality. The Panasonic FX-800D that we reviewed is a testament to that and we think Panasonic will continue this trend of great picture quality. But yes, some tech like HDMI 2.1 and more are missed when you are spending upwards of Rs 1,00,000 for a TV. There is no information on pricing or availability of the TVs in India.
