Where does India stand on 5G download and upload speeds?

India has reportedly seen one of the quickest 5G network deployments in the world.

5G networks were first launched in India almost two years back in October 2022. Ever since that day, a lot of people have switched to the high-speed connectivity that has spread rapidly in India. Our country has seen one of the quickest 5G network deployments in the world, according to an Ookla report.

The same report also reveals India’s standing regarding these networks and shares that the Indian 5G network finds itself amidst the top-performing networks globally. Read along to find out how India performed.

Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel are the two telecom companies that are leading the 5G transition across the country. It was because of these two that India saw a large-scale and prompt deployment of the next-generation mobile networks across the country. India now stands amongst the top 15 markets that have reported the fastest 5G median download speeds globally.

Currently, the 4G networks cater to a larger audience in India for their daily data and internet usage. However, the 5G technology offers an improved performance and user experience. In Q4 of 2023, a substantial difference was noticed between the 4G and 5G performance, as per Ookla.

India’s 5G download speed performance

The median download speed of 301.86 Mbps on 5G surpasses that of 4G by 18 times, where 4G achieved a median download speed of 16.05 Mbps. Data from Q4 of 2022 and 2023 reveals that even when users experienced “slower” 5G speeds, it was still better than the median download speeds of the 4G network.

India’s 5G upload speed performance

Now, speaking of the upload speeds, the median upload speed on 5G, recorded at 16.05 Mbps, surpasses the 4G upload speed by 5 times, which stood at 3.59 Mbps in Q4 2023. s.

With the network expanding in the country at a fast pace, it will be interesting to see how India does in the future.
