Vodafone hikes mobile Internet rates for PAYG 2G and 3G users
HIGHLIGHTS

Pay As You Go (PAYG) 2G and 3G customers will have to now shell out 4 paise per 10KB, as compared to 2 paise per 10KB.

Vodafone has announced raising mobile Internet tariffs for the Pay As You Go (PAYG) 2G and 3G customers. As per the new rates, PAYG pre-paid and post paid customers are charged 4 paise per 10KB, compared to 2 paise per 10KB charged earlier.

“Vodafone following its price change in November 2013 has revised its mobile internet charges for Pay as Go (PAYG) users. At 4p/10KB, Vodafone still offers most attractive and lowest standard mobile internet charges in the industry for pre-paid and post-paid customers. This is applicable to both 2G as well as 3G customers,” says a Vodafone India spokesperson. “This change is applicable across all circles but is being rolled out by each circle in a phased manner.”

Vodafone last year had slashed mobile Internet charges by 80 percent, bringing 2G data rates on PAYG mode equal to 3G rates. It's notable the new price hike is only for the PAYG customers. There hasn't been any change in the current data plans.

Vodafone hasn't revealed reasons why it increased the tariffs. However, it's likely to be aimed at increasing revenues from the data segment, which has driving its profits. In its recent annual report, the operator revealed its data usage grew 125% during the financial year 2014. The operator saw a 39% increase in mobile Internet users.
