HIGHLIGHTS

Reliance Jio reportedly now has over 300 million subscribers.

The telco apparently crossed the user mark on March 2.

Jio launched its services on September 2016 and by the end of 2018, its subscriber base grew quickly to 215 million subscribers. Now, quoting a source, PTI reports that the company has crossed the 300 million customers on March 2. By comparison, Bharti Airtel garnered 300 million customers in the 19th year of its operations. The company revealed in its December 2018 earning report that it had 284 million customers. However, the Vodafone-Idea merger is still India’s largest telco with 408 million active users.

The news of Jio crossing the 300 million customer mark comes soon after the telco announced it is now a 3 Exabyte per month mobile network. Back in December 2018, it reached a subscriber base of 280.1 million with the addition of 27.9 million subscribers in Q3 2018. The total wireless data traffic for the company was said to be close to 864 crore GB. Jio says video consumption on its network drives most of its usage, increasing to 460 crore hours per month. The company has also been adding new features to retain existing customers and entice new ones.

Jio recently announced its JioNews app that offers Live TV, videos, and combines offerings of the JioXpressNews, JioMags and JioNewsPaper apps. Jio customers get free premium access to the app and all its features, and other non-Jio users will be able to use premium features of the app for free during an initial trial period. The new app can be downloaded via Play Store and Apple App Store. It features blogs and news websites from India and overseas, along with digital magazines, e-newspapers, Live TV and videos.

The company also has its JioGigaFiber project in the works, which is yet to be rolled out commercially. The company commenced registrations for its JioGigaFiber project in August 2018 and is said to be awaiting regulatory approvals for its investment in Den Networks and Hathaway.
