The Indian Mobile Congress was held today at the newly revamped Pragati Maidan in New Delhi. During the event, Reliance Jio had some exciting news to share. The company shared that it successfully demonstrated India’s first satellite-based giga fiber service ‘JioSpaceFiber’. What is JioSpaceFiber and how does it benefit us? Read along to know more.
The JioSpaceFiber is a satellite-based broadband service. With the help of this, Jio will be able to offer broadband services to remote areas where cellular connectivity isn’t good or unavailable. So, it brings more areas under access to the internet. For this, Jio shook hands with Société Européenne des Satellites (SES) which is based out of Luxembourg.
The SES has more than 70 satellites in two different orbits presently and they give Jio access to their medium earth orbit (MEO) satellites- O3b and O3b mPOWER. It is because of this that Jio can provide satellite-based services in India. Further, this is the only MEO constellation right now that can provide us with fiber-like fast broadband services from space.
Now coming to its availability, the JioSpaceFiber is currently available in four different regions in India- Gir in Gujarat, Korba in Chattisgarh, Nabrangpur in Odissa, and ONGC Jorhat in Assam. Jio said that they will offer this service at affordable rates, however, the prices are yet unknown. The teleco is yet to announce its further expansion plans as well.
