Reliance had its 45th Annual General Meeting (AGM) live broadcasted via YouTube and social channels. The oil-to-tech conglomerate interestingly had also arranged a Metaverse (Virtual Reality-based) experience for the audience. In the event, besides announcing financial declarations and forecasts, it unveiled a trove of tech-related things including the Jio 5G rollout timeframe, details about Jio’s upcoming products and services like JioAirFiber, Jio Cloud PC, as well as the company’s global tech collaborations. Reliance Jio 5G Updates
Jio is aiming to launch Jio 5G in metro cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai by Diwali 2022. Not just that, by December 2023, the company expects the service to spread across the entire India including all Tehsils and Taluks. If it goes as planned, this would be the fastest 5G rollout in the world.
Jio calls its 5G service advanced for it is ‘Stand-alone’ without any dependency on 4G network. It also comes equipped with the “largest and best mix of spectrum and Carrier Aggregation technology” as well as smart sensors and Quantum Security.
The goal is that Jio 5G will “connect every-one, every-place and every-thing with the highest quality and most affordable data”.
It is earmarking an investment of ₹2 lakh crore for this purpose.
Jio AirFiber
AirFiber is a wireless Wi-Fi hotspot connected over Reliance Jio 5G through hardware called AirFiber Home Gateway. It boasts fiber-like speeds and hence the name.
Jio 5G’s Global Tech Collaborations
Jio’s key partners in the 5G business include:
- Meta for “immersive technology” likely AR/VR equipment.
- Google for cloud infrastructure and their work towards ultra-affordable 5G smartphones.
- Microsoft, Intel, and Qualcomm as well for cloud support.
- The company has also mentioned its partnership with Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung, and Cisco, although details aren’t divulged.
