In a recent update, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has announced new changes for SIM swapping or replacement. If you are someone who is looking to replace or swap their sim, then you should read this story carefully as you will now have to comply with these updated rules.
A new update has now been implemented. This was first announced as a part of the Telecommunication Mobile Number Portability (Ninth Amendment) Regulations, 2024. This was issued by TRAI on March 14, 2024.
So, what has changed? Earlier, the waiting period to swap or replace your SIM card was ten days. Now, the authority has reduced this waiting period to seven days. With this move, the authority wants to minimise the inconvenience that users face, but at the same time, it also wants to prevent fraud porting of SIM which has become pretty common.
TRAI has also added another regulation. The authority has now introduced an additional criterion wherein it can reject requests for a Unique Porting Code (UPC). If you are looking to swap your SIM card or replace it, then UPC is pretty necessary. Now, UPC will not be issued to a user if he/she is raising a request within seven days of a SIM swap or replacement.

This is another security attempt brought forth to prevent fraudulent activities associated with SIM replacements. The reduction of the waiting period from ten to seven days is a relief to many users.
What do you think about this new change? Do you think that there should be a waiting period or not? Let me know in the comments.
