Digital India: Intel launches ‘Digital Skills for India’ initiative

Intel is going big on the government's Digital India vision as it has launched quite a few initiatives including programs, training modules, applications and devices for common masses.

Intel has today launched a new initiative called 'Digital Skills for India' that aims to empower people with locally relevant digital tools and services. Under the initiative, Intel has introduced Digital Skills Training Application that is comprised of modules on Digital Literacy, Financial Inclusion, Healthcare and Cleanliness in five Indian languages.

The application will also be available on mobile platform (Google Play store) from December 6. Intel has also come up with an offline training module that will available in seven Indian languages.

Another main highlight of the initiative is partnership with Bharat Broadband Network Limited to build capacity by imparting digital literacy training to key resource persons in the first 1000 Panchayats under the National Optic Fiber Network roll-out in India.

Next year Intel will be launching an ‘Innovate For India Challenge’ under which it will encourage developers to provide solutions that are relevant for India and drive adoption of technology.

Intel made the announcements at an event in Delhi where it also showcased the Micromax Canvas Tab P666 powered by the Intel Atom Processor. According to Vikas Jain, Co-founder Micromax Informatics, the tablet is aimed at enabling a strong local ecosystem, and making technology available for common masses.

Intel also showcased a new concept of Live Application that allowed users to interact with the device in vernacular language. It demonstrated a speech recognition prototype in Tamil language.

Intel also showcased the Intel Sensing Platform, a solution combining hardware, mobile applications, analytics and cloud-based technology that enables mobile-based affordable and personal healthcare management application.

Speaking at the event, Debjani Ghosh, Vice President- Sales and Marketing Group, Managing Director- Intel South Asia said, “We believe that the government’s Digital India vision is going to be imperative to propel the country into its next phase of growth. The industry has been asked to participate to realize the vision and it is now up to us to work jointly with the government to do the right thing for our country.”
