Airtel just recently reached a new feat in terms of development. Just recently, it collaborated with Ericsson and Qualcomm Technologies to successfully test Ericsson’s pre-commercial Reduced Capability (RedCap) software on Airtel’s very own 5G network. I know some of you might not be following this, let me explain.
So the recent test, which was conducted by Bharti Airtel Ericsson and Qualcomm Technologies marked the first time that RedCap was implemented and validated in India which was conducted on a 5G TDD network.
Now, what is this RedCap software? This RedCap software produced by Ericsson enhances the 5G capabilities. Once it is enabled, it offers a wider range of use cases and even increases the number of 5G connections from various devices. These include- smartwatches, wearables, industrial sensors, and AR/VR devices.
For your reference, you can compare RedCap to LTE device category 4 technology. RedCap even offers similar data rates. However, the point of distinction here is that RedCap enables better latency, device energy efficiency, and spectrum efficiency. RedCap has a lot to offer and explore, for starters, this software has the power to even support advanced 5G features like enhanced positioning and network slicing.

Speaking about the same, Sandeep Hingorani, Head of Network Solutions for Customer Unit Bharti at Ericsson said, “With our customers like Airtel continuously investing in network capabilities to seize the opportunities offered by 5G, the commercialization of RedCap capabilities will enable them to grow their consumer business and enable new industry applications, all while improving network performance and energy efficiency.”
With RedCap, device integration will become efficient too. It will offer a cost-effective option for plenty of devices from wearables to augmented reality and so on. Once RedCap is enabled, an array of options opens up for communications service providers. 5G standalone infrastructure will also improve substantially. This will in turn be beneficial for both individual consumers as well as the industrial clients.
