If you are a selenophile, a person who loves the moon, then this is your last chance to experience the final supermoon of this year, the Beaver Moon. This celestial event occurs when the moon reaches the closest point to Earth and this weekend it is going to dazzle in the sky. Beaver Moon, named by Native American tribes, signifies the time when beavers begin their winter preparations. It’s also denoted as the Frost Moon or Snow Moon as it marks the onset of cold weather.

A visual phenomenon known as “moon illusion” will make the moon appear larger near the horizon. You can even experience the Pleiades star cluster (the Seven Sisters), which can be seen near the moon. This cluster will be positioned below the moon on Friday and will shift to the upper right of the moon by Saturday.

Tips to capture the supermoon on your phone

If you want to photograph this last celestial event through your phone, but are worried about the quality of photographs, we’ve got you covered. Follow the below mentioned tips and tricks to get a sharper and clearer picture.

  • Choose location wisely: Try going to a place where you’ll get minimal distractions such as skyscrapers or a place where you’ll get minimal light pollution as it can affect the detailing of the picture.
  • Stability is the key: Make sure to use a tripod for stabilising your phone as it becomes important for shooting in low lighting conditions and pictures with long focal lengths. It helps you get a sharp picture instead of a shaky one.
  • Optical zoom can be a better option: If you’ve got a phone with optical zoom, it’s the icing on the cake. You can use optical zoom as digital zoom stretches and compresses the quality of photographs. On the other hand, optical zoom lenses shift mechanically to zoom the image. But if you have a phone with digital zoom, no need to worry, you can use AI for enhancement in post-processing.
  • Use the timer: To avoid any shaking while clicking the picture, you can set the timer in your camera app and then click the pictures. It’ll prevent you from getting shaky and blurry pictures.
  • Picture quality: Don’t forget to turn on the High Dynamic Range (HDR) feature in your camera app. This feature enhances the picture quality by capturing more light and colours. Set the resolution to maximum so it’ll capture more details and provide a larger image.

Apart from these, you should click pictures in manual mode so you’ll have the control for setting up the exposure and focus. And while post-processing the pictures you can use mobile apps such as Lightroom and Snapseed for more accessibility rather than using the default editing feature of the phone.
