ZTE to target Indian market with affordable 4G smartphones

The company says it will soon finalise specific 4G models that will be launched in India.

China's telecom equipment manufacturer ZTE Corporation has revealed plans to launch as many as six new smartphones, a mix of 3G and 4G versions, in India. The smartphones will be priced between Rs. 7,000 and Rs. 18,000. Moreover, the company plans to establish a handset research and development centre in the country.

"ZTE is particularly gung-ho about the business potential of 4G LTE deployments in India and we will shortly finalise specific 4G models that will be launched," Adam Zeng, executive VP and worldwide head of ZTE's handsets business is quoted as saying. 

In a bid to ensure pan India presence, ZTE has plans to tie up with five regional distributors along with partnerships with e-commerce sites like Flipkart, Amazon, eBay.

Moreover, ZTE is holding talks with with chipset makers such as MediaTek, Marvell and Qualcomm to launch affordable 4G mobile phones in India. According to reports, the company will launch its opular V5 budget 4G handset, which is currently available in China for about $130 (Rs 7,700).

ZTE's aggressive plans for India come months after another Chinese company Xiaomi revealed plans to target the Indian market with the 'aggressively priced phones'.

That said, India is yet to have budget/affordable smartphones with 4G support. Despite demand for better Internet connectivity and increasing data consumption, growth of 4G LTE in India hasn't picked up yet.
