Xiaomi’s own mobile processors to arrive in phones by early 2016?
Xiaomi is reportedly developing proprietary mobile processors, which will start featuring in smartphones from 2016, reducing its reliance on Qualcomm and MediaTek
Xiaomi, one of the largest cellphone manufacturers in the world, looks set to follow the footsteps of Apple, Samsung, and Huawei by fitting its smartphone with custom mobile processors. Earlier in May, reports stated that Xiaomi is partnering with Leadcore, a Chinese chip manufacturer company, to make custom chipsets. Further reports currently suggest a possible launch of Xiaomi’s own processor lineup in early 2016.
Xiaomi has so far been using chipsets manufactured by Qualcomm and MediaTek in its devices, with the sole exception of the Redmi 2A, which runs on a Leadcore chipset. The new ‘custom’ chipsets might be rolled out first with the cheaper phones – possibly on the new Redmi series. Massive shipment demands, coupled with Xiaomi’s objective of differentiating its products, have led it to consider manufacturing its own chipsets. This will give Xiaomi independence from Qualcomm and MediaTek, who already have a massive number of companies acquiring their services.
Additionally, partnering with Leadcore will help Xiaomi to inherit a vast portfolio of intellectual patents that include LTE and LTE-A technologies, among others. With a new Redmi Note 2 scheduled to launch this year, and the proprietary chipset looking like a far cry from actual implementation, Xiaomi is most likely to fit the new Redmi Note 2 with a Snapdragon 615 processor. Even with its advent, it is highly unlikely that the new processors will immediately pose a threat to Apple, or Samsung, who also manufacture their own chipsets.
