Xiaomi is now looking to expand its eco-system in India by launching its own portal, through which it plans to sell phones as well.

Xiaomi is now exploring an option to sell its devices through its online portal in India. Currently, the company sells its products in India via e-commerce site Flipkart, and offline through Bharti Airtel.

According to reports, Xiaomi will be launching its online portal 'Mi.com' in India later this year.

"We are currently looking for warehousing and logistics partners in India, as well as deciding on a payment mechanisms like cash on delivery. It may take anywhere between three to nine months," Xiaomi India Head Manu Jain is quoted as saying.

However, the tie up with Flipkart will continue, he added. "We have always stated that India is one of our most important markets. We are big plans for India this year… We are in process of signing the lease on a facility in Bangalore, which will be our R&D unit. This is the first one outside China," Jain added.

Xiaomi has already gained a lot of popularity in India mainly because of its high spec'd phones at competitive prices. The company recently close to buying 20,000 square foot R&D center in India.  At the Mi 4 launch, Xiaomi revealed to extensively focus on service centres in India.

Despite its unique flash sales model, Xiaomi's phones have sold in good numbers in India. Globally, Xiaomi ranked third in the last quarter.

“Key to its success was the launch of its Mi4 smartphone in August, which was positioned as a high-end alternative to the status quo. What remains to be seen is how quickly the company can move beyond its home territories to drive volumes higher,” explains IDC in its quarterly tracker.
