Xiaomi to begin production in India within 12-18 months

Reiterating that India is an important market for Xiaomi, the company plans to begin local production within 12-18 months.

Xiaomi has reiterated its focus on the Indian market. During the launch of the Redmi 2 and Mi Pad, the company revealed it would begin local production within 12-18 months.

Xiaomi's Hugo Barra also revealed that the company is looking to invest into local start ups and service centers. "The fundamental point is we want to build deeply rooted Indian products because this is a hugely important market for us and there is nothing more powerful than being a local business," he said, adding that India could also serve as an export hub.

Xiaomi, a recent entrant in the Indian market, has managed to gain massive success in a short period. The company thrived on its unique online-exclusive sales model and high spec'd phones at attractive prices. It also heated up the competition with the popular local brand Micromax and market leader Samsung.

According to a recent IDC report, Xiaomi currently holds fifth position in the Indian market. Samsung holds top spot with a 22 percent market share, Micromax follows with an 18 percent share. Intex has an 8 percent share, Lava holds 7 percent. Xiaomi owns a 4 percent share.
