The Xiaomi Redmi 5A offers incremental improvements in the form of a streamlined design and longer standby time. The smartphone is priced at around Rs 6,000 and should be launched in India sometime next year.

Xiaomi has announced the Redmi 5A, successor to its entry-level Redmi 4A smartphone in China. The handset had appeared in the form of a leaked poster early in the day and the final device confirms the leaked specifications. The Redmi 5A joins Redmi Note 5A, another entry-level smartphone.

The biggest difference between Redmi 5A and Redmi 4A is its premium metal build and a streamlined design with rounded corners, and a slightly smaller battery life. The smartphone features a 5-inch HD display with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels and uses the same quad-core Snapdragon 425 chipset also powering the Redmi 4A. The smartphone comes in only one storage variant with 2GB RAM and 16GB storage, and support for 128GB expandable storage.

The Redmi 5A offers a 13MP primary camera with f/2.2 aperture and supports panorama mode, burst mode, facial recognition and monochrome flash temperature. The handset features a 5MP front camera with f/2.0 aperture, selfie countdown timer and facial recognition support. The main camera supports 1080p video recording at 30fps and 720p video recording at 30fps. The smartphone runs MIUI 9 with a new smart assistant, split-screen multitasking and image search features. It supports a new eye protection mode for adjusting colour temperature. The handset supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1, GPS and 4G LTE.

The Redmi 5A is backed by a 3000mAh battery and measures 140.4 x 70.1 x 8.35 mm in dimensions. The smartphone will be available in gold, rose gold and silver grey colour and is priced at 599 Yuan (around Rs 5,990). The Redmi 5A is one of the most affordable smartphones from the company and will be available for pre-order in China later today. The handset will be available from JD.com, Lynx among others. The Redmi 4A was launched in March and its replacement should arrive in India around the same time.
