Xiaomi has announced a new version of its Redmi 2 smartphone. Called the Redmi 2A, the smartphone features a Leadcore L1860C chipset (quad-core 1.5GHz CPU and Mali-T628MP2 GPU) and is priced at $97, roughly Rs. 6046.01.
The Redmi 2A has a 4.7-inch 720p display. The phone runs Android 5.0 Lollipop and features 1GB of RAM and 8GB internal storage. It comes with 8MP rear camera and a 2MP front camera. It is powered by a 2200 mAh battery.
The Redmi 2A seems to be an affordable version of the Redmi 2, which is priced at Rs. 6,999. There's no word on the availability of the smartphone in India, but we expect it to be available soon. Also read: First Impressions: Xiaomi Redmi 2
Apart from the Redmi 2A, Xiaomi has announced a slew of new products including Mi Note Pink edition, Mi TV2 55-inch and Smart Power Strip.
Specifications of the Redmi 2A remind of Xiaomi's recently rumoured $65 (roughly Rs. 4,000) smartphone. Rumoured specifications of the phone included 4.7-inch 720 p display, Android 4.4.4 KitKat and 1GB of RAM.
Xiaomi has grown in popularity in India mainly because of its high spec'd affordable smartphones. While the competition in the budget segment has grown tougher, Xiaomi is looking to bring more powerful phones for this segment. The new Leadcore version could help Xiaomi expand its base in this segment.
