The company’s co-founder and VP, Liwan Jiang has said on his Weibo account that the phone will be released after the Spring Festival in China

Xiaomi co-founder and VP, Liwan Jiang, has finally confirmed that the company’s next flagship, the Mi 5, will launch in February and will be powered by a Snapdragon 820 SoC. In his personal Weibo account he said, “The Xiaomi Mi 5 with the latest Snapdragon 820 processor is ready and in volume production. It will be released after the Spring Festival to have enough time for stocking up.” The Spring Festival is when China will celebrate the new year and will be held on February 8.

The Xiaomi Mi 5 is expected to come with a 5.2-inch Quad HD display with 3GB or 4GB of RAM. It has been tipped to come with at least 32GB of storage and a 3600mAh battery. The device may comes with a 16MP camera at the back with a 13MP front facing camera. Leaked renders suggest that the the phone will comes with a thin strip of a Home button which will supposedly be the fingerprint scanner. Reports have also suggested that the Mi 5 will comes with 2.5D glass on the display as well as a USB Type-C port.

The launch of the Xiaomi Mi 5 has been rumoured for almost a year and the company has taken its own time with its follow up to the popular Mi 4. Last month, Xiaomi’s CEO, Lei Jun said that the company was focusing on user experience rather than being the first to launch with the Snapdragon 820. He said, “put greater importance on the user experience and mass production, rather than being first.”

However, The Xiaomi Mi 5 will not be the first phone to be announced with Qualcomm’s newest flagship-grade processor. That honor goes to the LeTV Le Max Pro, which was unveiled at CES yesterday. The phone sports a huge 6.33-inch display with a resolution of 2560 x 1440. At the back is a 21MP camera with a fingerprint sensor located just below it. The phone runs Android Marshmallow v6.0 and will be available in 32GB, 64GB and 128GB variants. It is also equipped with a 3400mAh battery and support for Quick Charge 2.0.

It was earlier speculated that the Samsung Galaxy S7 will be the first to come with a Snapdragon 820 SoC as it was reported that Samsung has the exclusive rights to the SoC till April this year. Samsung is expected to launch the device during the World Mobile Congress show scheduled to be held in Barcelona in the latter half of February.
