Xiaomi halts COD option on Redmi Note 5 Pro for “initial few sales”

HIGHLIGHTS

The move is aimed at curbing resellers who purchase the devices in bulk, and then sell the devices at a premium.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Note 5 Pro were launched a few weeks back and have been on sale thrice till today. The phone has been seemingly quite popular with customers and the company has even claimed that it sold three lakh smartphones in three minutes during the first sale. However, it seems like the company is facing issues with resellers, who make multiple purchases and sell the smartphones at a premium. In order to combat this, Xiaomi has announced that it would be removing the Cash On Delivery (COD) option for the Redmi Note 5 Pro on Mi.com and Flipkart. The company notes that this is not a permanent move, and will only be valid for the “initial few sales.”

“In order to restrict reselling, we have decided to remove COD payment option for the upcoming sales of Redmi Note 5 Pro on mi.com and Flipkart (Only for initial few sales). This would give a better chance to our Mi fans to purchase our products. We have always, and will continue to stringently discourage unauthorized reselling across all our channels,” The company stated on its official form.

It remains to be seen if this move will help more genuine buyers get their hands on the products. However, we can always hope that the company will take even more steps in order to curb reselling practices such as offering more quantities of smartphones during sales.

This move by Xiaomi to fight fraudulent purchases is not new. The company already has a system that keeps a check on Mi Accounts with suspicious activity. These activities include the ordering of multiple phones within a short span of time, sharing of proper addresses, ordering from multiple IDs using the same user information and more. Those found to have a suspicious user account will find themselves unable to place COD orders, place any orders on mi.com, or unable to redeem coupons.
