Xiaomi has claimed to have sold 3 million Redmi 3S smartphones (including Redmi 3S, Redmi 3S Prime and Redmi 3S Plus models) in India in less than six months. The Xiaomi Redmi 3S and Redmi 3S Prime were launched in August, while Redmi 3S Plus was introduced in October as an offline-only device.

The Chinese OEM recently dethroned Lenovo as the second largest smartphone brand in India. The company has been growing its presence in the country for the past two years and also retained it's number 1 position in the online smartphone market.

"Xiaomi climbed up to 2nd place with 10.7 percent share in CY Q4 2016 against 3.3 percent share in the same period last year. Year-on-year shipments grew threefold while sequential growth was 15.3 percent in CY Q4 2016. Xiaomi also expanded its retail presence with the launch of an exclusive model for offline channels in CY Q4 2016," IDC said in its quarterly release.

Xiaomi recently announced the Redmi Note 4, successor to its popular Redmi Note 3 smartphone. It claims to have sold 3.6 million units of the Redmi Note 3 and aims to sell 7 million Redmi Note 4 devices in India. The company is able to achieve this sales figure due to its local manufacturing efforts. The Chinese smartphone maker claims to assemble most of its products at Foxconn's Sri City manufacturing unit in India.

"Product is at the core of Xiaomi’s strategy, and a strong line-up of products with distinctive technological innovations has been critical in driving our India story. We are committed to sustaining the momentum and will continue to launch amazing products here in India," said Manu Jain, India MD, Xiaomi.

While Xiaomi has grown in the recent past, the company faces resistance from other Chinese vendors like Oppo and Vivo of late. To grow further, Xiaomi will have to strengthen its offline presence and introduce more devices going forward, in India.
