With more smartphone users, sharing of obscene content rises in India
HIGHLIGHTS

The National Crime Records Bureau has registered a growth of 104% in registered cases related to sharing of obscene content in 2013.

The sharing of obscene content over smartphones has grown in India over the past few years. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), the transmission of obscene material increased by 104% from 2012 to 2013. The total number of registered cases rose from 589 in 2012 to 1,203 in 2013.

In a report by Newslaundry, the publication points out that while the sharing of obscene content rose by 100%, the number of smartphone users rose by 300% in the same time period. This is not to say that smartphones are the reason behind this growth, but Newslaundry points out that they have definitely contributed to it.

In 2013, the NCRB recorder 116, 211, 226 and 310 such cases from Bihar, Haryana, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh respectively. For the same states, the numbers were at 7, 116, 90 and 44 in 2012. The 2013 numbers are also the highest in NCRB’s list, with West Bengal being the only other state on the list to surpass the 100 mark.

India has been clocking big numbers related to Internet, smartphone and mobile services usage. The country is behind only China and the United States in various mobile internet related areas. In addition, the surge in mobile users is also edging out PC or desktop usage, which is why various companies are focusing on the mobile platform instead of desktops.
