The Windows Phone Marketplace is rapidly catching up with other popular apps stores like Android Market, as the Microsoft apps store has reportedly garnered more than 50,000 apps. The Windows Phone Marketplace has accomplished the milestone nearly a year and two months after its launch. It was in August, the Marketplace had gone past 30,0000 apps. According to third-party figures from All About Windows Phone, more than a third of the apps were included in the last three months, and nearly 16 per cent in the last 30 days.
The All About Windows Phone report points out that the Windows Marketplace hit the 50,000 apps mark ( 50,126 apps to be precise) sooner than they had anticipated. It also highlights the fact that Microsoft’s app store took almost a year to reach 40k apps but just 40 days to add another 10,000 apps. The report further suggests the Windows Phone is likely to continue to achieve similar accelerated growth in 2012 as well.
However, its notable that the total number of published items does not suggest the same number of apps available to users. According to the All About Windows Phone report, out of the 50,126 items published, some 6,000 items were withdrawn or unavailable. Also, some items are only available in select markets. Thus the current approximate figures are: US (42,655), UK (40,305), France (39,235), Spain (37,027), Italy (36,944), Germany (36,958), Australia (37,024), India (36,752) and Singapore (36,922).
Entertainment is the largest category on Window Phone Marketplace as it comprised of 7,543 items. Three other big categories were books reference (7,014 items), games (6,991) and tools productivity (6797 items). These four categories (out of seventeen) make up 57 per cent of the entire content on Windows Phone Marketplace. Take a look at the chart posted by All About Windows Phone below:
