Recent reports indicate that Microsoft is planning to launch a GDR3 update for its Windows Phone 8 OS in order to be at par with Android flagship smartphones and phablets, with support for an additional column of Live Tiles, rounding them off to four.
The GDR3 update is expected to enhance the display resolution limit from 1280×768 pixels to a full 1080p HD, and also feature support for quad-core processors in the Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 and 800 chipsets.
According to ZDnet’s Mary J Foley, the update will also bring other changes: “Along with the higher resolution, GDR3 also could include changes in the start screen and core Windows Phone 8 apps, such as possibly adding a third column of mid-size-tiled apps in the start screen.’
The Windows Phone 8 GDR3 update is expected to be made available for all current generation Windows Phone 8 smartphones. However, the release date for the update has not been revealed yet , although sources have confirmed that it will launch before the close of the year.
